Dear Prayer Partners, Friends,
Thanks to so many of you for your notes and prayers. It will be impossible for me to answer most of them, but they are helping me in this most difficult time. My world has been turned upside down and I’m trying to find it again. The peace and comfort of the Lord are very real and I am able to console others knowing that Dave is in the presence of the Lord and has probably greeted his heroes-Calvin, Luther, Knox, Zwingli, and his parents and mine, as he said he was going to do.
He received his call to heaven on Friday, March 22nd at 9:45pm. We had been with him as a family singing hymns and reading Scripture to him, along with Dr. Will Ackles (who has lived with us since January teaching in the seminary) and Rev. Ramon (Moncho) Celis, Dave’s closest friend since childhood.
Three memorial services were held at the seminary on Saturday, March 23rd. The 9am service was organized by his presbytery, the 12pm service was organized by the synod of the peninsula, and the 3pm service was organized by the family. It was 106 degrees, the hottest day of the year, as nearly 3000 came to share our grief and joy. Most all were stunned by the rapidity of his illness since we had been visiting in villages 3 weeks ago. The governor, whom Dave had known since childhood, sent a beautiful floral arrangement in his honor.
Debbie and her husband are moving in with me and hope to build a studio apartment on a 2nd floor of our house. I will be happy to have them near. The lord knew what He was doing when He brought her back home to Yucatan in June!
I will miss our weekend travels to so many villages and congregations, teaching, preaching, and playing my keyboard. I will wait to see what the Lord has in store for me.
We have set up 3 funds if you are interested in a memorial gift for him. His 2 favorite projects were the camp and the seminary. The other is personal expenses. The Lord supplied all the funds for the hospital, doctors and burial thru love offerings large and small. He was an extra-ordinary person, a real man of God, and I am proud to have been his wife for 50+ years.
Your servant for Jesus’ sake,
P.S. If you wish to make a gift in his memory, we have set up 3 memorial funds: one for camp, one for the seminary, and one for family expenses. If you need a receipt for IRS, send them through the Magi as usual, making the check out to the Magi and attaching a separate note stating what it is for.
