HOLY HUMOR: Taking it With You

There once was a very rich man who “wanted to take it with him” when he died. He prayed and prayed until finally the Lord gave in, but on one condition – he could only bring one suitcase of his wealth.

The rich man then began to worry, “What kind of currency should I bring – the dollar, the pound, the yen, the mark?” He finally decided that the best thing to do was to turn it all into gold bullion.

The day came when God called him home. St. Peter greeted him, but told him he couldn’t bring his suitcase in with him.

“I have an agreement with god that I can take it with me,” the man explained.

“That’s unusual,” St. Peter said. “This has never happened before. Mid if I take a look?”

The man opened the suitcase to reveal the shining gold bullion.

“Pavement!” the amazed St. Peter exclaimed. “Why in the world would you bring pavement?”

The church’s annual Stewardship Sunday is fast approaching. At this time, we ask each member, each family, and all our regular worshippers, to prayerfully examine their resources and to pledge a portion to God’s work. Soon everyone will receive a pledge card in the mail. On Stewardship Sunday, November 23, a special collection of the pledge cards will be held during the morning service. The cards may also be returned by mail to the church office. These pledges help the church plan our budget for the coming year.

Thank you to the Patriot Guard Riders for their amazing show of respect at the memorial service for Edwin L. Fox. The time and care they took in remembering our loved one is greatly appreciated and will be remembered.

Information for the November Green Hill Good Newsletter needs to be submitted to the church office by Tuesday, November 18. You can contact the office by email or by phone, or you can drop your news off in the basket on the door. Many thanks to those who contribute!

Tickets are now available for the next Belk Charity Day Sale! The sale will be held at the Dothan location on November 8, from 6am to 10am. To attend, you must purchase a $5 ticket from one of the members of the Presbyterian Women at Green Hill. This very special ticket will not only get you admission to the sale, but it also acts as a coupon to get you $5 off of your first purchase. That’s in addition to getting the already marked discounts of 20% to 70% off! This sale is the year’s largest fundraiser for the Green Hill Presbyterian Women’s Mission Fund.

The Legacy Christmas CDs have returned, and this year we have TWO different versions for you to choose from: Treasured Carols of the Kirk, which debuted last year, and Nativity Carols and Hymns, which is brand new this year. All proceeds generated by these CDs will be split between Living Waters for the World and the Presbyterian Women Birthday Offering. To pick up a CD, please see a member of the Presbyterian Women Coordinating Team, or stop by the church office. A $15 donation per CD is suggested. They make fantastic gifts!

On Wednesday, November 12, our regular Fellowship Supper will be set aside for a special Taco Fiesta! Please come and join us for an evening of fun. The cost for dinner is just $3 for Adults, $1 for Children, Free for kids 6 and under. If you plan to attend, please fill out a reservation slip, or contact the church office.

On Wednesday, November 12, immediately following the Taco Fiesta, we ask that everyone join us for a Packing Party! It’s that time of year again, when we pack up shoeboxes with small gifts to go to children around the world. As most of you know, this is an amazing outreach program of Samaritan’s Purse, who adds messages about Jesus to all of the boxes, and brings the Word of God to people who may have never heard.

What we need from you is the fun stuff. Think about the items you might put in a Christmas stocking: dolls, trucks, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, balls, and especially hard candy or gum. If you feel called to contribute, please put your items in the blue collection box in the Fellowship Hall. Thank you for your support of this mission project.

Don’t forget to change your clocks before you go to bed on November 1. On Sunday morning, November 2, Daylight Savings Time ends, and we all get back that extra hour we gave up in the Spring. We look forward to seeing you at church on Sunday morning, at the correct time. 

On Wednesday, November 19, we will have our final Town Hall Meeting. The meeting will begin immediately following the potluck supper. The purpose of this meeting is for the Elders to educate the members about issues within the PCUSA and for the Elders to take questions and get input from the members. Some important decisions must be made by the Session before a new pastor can be hired. These town hall meetings are an important step in that process. We hope everyone will be able to attend.

The Green Hill annual Thanksgiving Dinner will be held on Sunday, November 23, at 4pm. Please make a note of this earlier time. Reservation slips will be available in the pew racks as we get closer to the date. If you plan to attend, please fill one out so the ladies of the church can organize the food.

The next Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 19. Many of us are caring for individuals who have Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias. Our meetings consist of education, guest speakers, sharing, and prayer. Let’s share caregiving approaches we’ve tried and discuss what works, what doesn’t, and how you can care for yourself during this challenge time. We want all caregivers to understand the disease and to know that they are not alone.

Our Women’s Bible Study is going well. There are still books and room for you so come for Lesson three on November 13th at 11:00 am to study about being a living bible for Christ. Our bodies are like jars of clay but we contain a priceless treasure to be shared with all people.

Our General Membership Gathering was a fun time of fellowship. It was a real treat to have Millie V. visit us as well as Joyce Henderson. Our dynamic speaker Susan Owens represented Vivian B Adams School with an excellent informative presentation. Sandi’s devotion about letting everyone know we belong to HIM was a great introduction to this month’s Bible lesson. Ruth O. gave a short introduction to the Champion of Children’s Home Program which was excellent.

Please don’t forget it’s Thank Offering time again. Our Thank Offering continues to be a critically needed source of financial support for health and development projects overseas. Please see Thank Offering News posted on the women’s board in the fellowship hall for a list of 2014 projects. Use your Thank Offering envelops or mark your check for PW Thank Offering. Gloria still has many tickets available for the Belk’s Charity Sale on November 3rd so pick yours up soon.

Don’t forget to mark December 8th 9th for our Christmas Party. We give thanks to HIM and praise his name for he is good and his love endures forever. Betty Jo
