The following letter was sent to our Presbytery last month for distribution to all of the other churches in the Presbytery.
It was signed by all of the members of the Green Hill Session.

To Our Leadership in the South Alabama Presbytery and Fellow Churches:

The recommended changes to church polity recently made by the commissioners to the 221st General Assembly, PC(USA), like no others recommended in the history of this denomination, threaten to create an irreparable schism in the unity of PC(USA).
We, the Session of Green Hill, have immediate concern with the following issues:

A) The usurping of the authority of the Book of Order and subordinate Presbyteries to determine policy by collective majority vote, through the unjustified application of Authoritative Interpretation;

B) Allowing for the ordination of openly homosexual and non-celibate leaders in the church;

C) Approving same gender marriages and attempting to redefine the Biblical definition of marriage;

D) Allowing ordained clergy to perform same sex marriages;

E) Repudiating the Biblical covenant established between God and Abraham that recognizes Israel as God’s people, through divestment in American corporations that do business with Israel while ignoring their concurrent business ties to Palestinian organizations;

F) Wasting precious church resources by involvement in civil issues extending beyond the purview of the church, such as gun control, revision of the tax code, and calling for a moratorium on the death penalty in capital cases; while

G) Denying the sanctity of life in the unborn; and

H) Refusing to even acknowledge the plight of unwanted children.

The proposed overture to change the definition of marriage has openly broken from God’s sovereign guidance and has already evidenced the deepening of divisions within our denomination. PC(USA) has experienced a tremendous drop in our membership over the last 10 years, and adoption of this new polity will lead to an even further decline. Adoption of these recommended changes will result in the PC(USA) forfeiting its role of serving as a faithful witness to God’s Word. Disobedience of God always results in His punishment. We must all humble ourselves before God and repent for our actions.

The Session of Green Hill Presbyterian Church calls upon our Presbyterian sisters and brothers in the Presbytery of South Alabama to initiate a period of personal and corporate prayer, discernment, and repentance from now until the next meeting of our Presbytery. We urge such a period to be devoted to the study of these issues listed above and the seeking of guidance from the Holy Spirit as to the manner in which to respond to these recommendations of the 221st General Assembly, PC(USA).

Together in Christ,

The Session of Green Hill

Please note that on the first Sunday in January, the church office will start off the New Year with a new prayer list. We are going to remove everyone and start fresh. If you know of someone who should remain on the list, or of someone who needs to be added to the list, please contact the church office. Thank you.

Thank you to Rev. David Jamison, Rev. Sid Leak, and Rev. Louie Reynolds, for being our Guest Ministers during the month of December. We look forward to seeing them again when they are able to join us.

Information for the February Green Hill Good Newsletter needs to be submitted to the church office by Tuesday, January 20. You can contact the office by email or by phone, or you can drop your news off in the basket on the door. Many thanks to those who contribute!

On Wednesday, January 21, our regular Fellowship Supper will be set aside for a special Chili, Grilled Cheese, and Board Game night. Stay tuned to the Sunday bulletin for more details.

The next Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 21, at 10:00am. Many of us are caring for individuals who have Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias. Our meetings consist of education, guest speakers, sharing, and prayer. Let’s share caregiving approaches we’ve tried and discuss what works, what doesn’t, and how you can care for yourself during this challenging time. We want all caregivers to understand the disease and to know that they are not alone.

The SARCOA Santa for Seniors project was a huge success. Our needy recipient and her grandson received all of her requested items as well as many extras, thanks to you.

The annual Christmas party was held on December 2. It was large in fellowship, food, and fun. Those who missed it, missed a good time – and, we missed you.

Thank you to everyone who has made a donation in exchange for a Legacy Christmas CD. We are supporting two very worthy causes with this project: Living Waters for the Word, and the Presbyterian Women Birthday Offering. There are a few CDs left. We would love to sell out. They make fantastic last minute gifts! See a member of the PW or the church office staff if you are interested.

On January 8, 2015, the Presbyterian Women Coordinating Team will meet at 10:00am. The Bible Study will be held at 11:00am.

Have a wonderful, safe holiday and a blessed 2015.

Merry Christmas

A Christian girl, Rachel Whitaker (Jordan Trovillion) goes off to college for her freshman year and begins to be influenced by her popular Biology professor (Harry Anderson) who teaches that evolution is the answer to the origins of life. When Rachel’s father, Stephen Whitaker (Jay Pickett) senses something changing with his daughter, he begins to examine the situation and what he discovers catches him completely off guard. Now very concerned about Rachel drifting away from her Christian faith, he tries to do something about it!

Mark your calendars for the weekend of January 23-25 for “A Matter of Faith” to be shown at the College Cinema in Enterprise, Alabama.
