Green Hill Good News, August 2016

Green Hill Youth at WinShape 2016

In an ecumenical gesture, the Prime Minister of Israel challenged the Pope to a friendly game of golf. Not a golfer, the Pope called in a cardinal and asked him if he knew of a cardinal who could represent him in the game.

The cardinal said he knew of no cardinal who plays golf well, but “there is a famous American golfer who is a Catholic by the name of Jack Nicklaus. We can make him a cardinal, and he can play the Prime Minister of Israel as your personal representative.”

Nicklaus agreed to play and was appointed a cardinal. After the match, Nicklaus telephoned the Pope and said, “Your Holiness, I have some good and some bad news. The good news is that I played the best golf in my life. My drives were long and true, and my putting was splendid.”

“What’s the bad news?” the Pope asked.

“I lost to Rabbi Woods by three strokes,” Nicklaus replied.

The deadline for submissions to the September Green Hill Good News is Thursday, August 18. You can contact the office by email or by phone, or you can drop your news off in the basket on the door. Each month the church office does its best to get the newsletter printed and distributed by the last Sunday of the month. Early submissions are appreciated.

On Sundays we need a team of two people to serve as ushers for the morning worship service. Ushers are needed to greet people, to pass out bulletins, to collect prayer requests, and to collect the offering. For our
visitors, our ushers are the first people they meet, and we need to make them feel welcome.

Over the past several months, we have had trouble filling this need. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered, especially those who were called into service at the last moment. We really appreciate you!

If you are available to serve as an usher, please sign up on the board in the kitchen. You can serve for as many or as few days as you would like. If you have any questions, please contact Sandi in the church office.

The next Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support meeting will be held on August 17. These monthly meetings are open to anyone who is dealing with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia in their family. We will get together, share our stories, and work on learning more about how to deal with these diseases.

Green Hill Cafe is held every Sunday morning from 10:30am to 11:00am. Coffee, doughnuts, and other assorted breakfast foods are served in the Fellowship Hall in between Sunday School and the Worship Service. Green Hill Cafe is a time for Christian Fellowship with our Green Hill Family, and it is a time to welcome, and get to know, our visitors.

Are you looking for an opportunity to serve? We need Café Hosts! We need people to set up the food prior to Café and to clean up afterwards. Beverages are supplied by the church, and food expenses are reimbursed by the church. If you are interested, please contact either Ron Seery or the church office. The sign-up sheet is in the kitchen.

The Prayer Band at Green Hill is made up of church members who have answered God’s call to “pray without ceasing.” The members of the Prayer Band receive prayer requests from members and from friends of our church, and offer up prayers to the Lord on their behalf.

If there is a person or a situation you would like the Prayer Band to keep in prayer, please let us know. You may contact the church office to have a name added to the prayer list, or if immediate prayer is needed, contact one of the Prayer Band members directly. From 9am to 6pm, call Ida Aldrich. From 6pm to 9pm, call Gloria Webb.

We’re getting ready for the 2016-2017 Youth Bible Study classes, and we are looking for some volunteers to help out. We need people to pick children up at school, to bring snacks and drinks, to help during Bible Study, and to fill in as substitutes when the regular teachers can’t be there. If you’d like to help, you can put your name on the sign-up board in the narthex, or you can contact April Seery directly. Thank you to all of our volunteers!

Green Hill is pleased to welcome the Enterprise Arts Homeschool Co-op. This homeschool group has made arrangements to use some of our classrooms on Monday mornings (from mid-September to mid-December) for classes like Sign Language, Intro to Theater, and Intro to Art Mediums & Techniques. The classes are being taught by parents who are sharing their talents with the rest of the group. It will be fun extracurricular activities for the children to add to the core classes they do at home. We are pleased that the rooms that usually sit empty during the day will be filled with children and families.

As all of you have heard on the news, there is a new craze sweeping the nation called Pokemon Go. Pokemon Go is an “augmented reality” game that people play on their cell phones. Players use the cameras on their cell phones to see and capture Pokémon characters that are scattered through the city.

Green Hill has been selected as one of several PokeStops in town. Players who are on church property can collect items like PokeBalls that are used to collect Pokémon. So, if you see someone wandering around church property staring at his/her cell phone, don’t be worried. They’re just playing the game.

WinShape Camp is a community event and St. Luke United Methodist Church would like to thank our church partners. These churches have provided scholarship dollars, transportation, spiritual counselors, volunteers, and meals for the WinShape Staff: First Baptist Church, First United Methodist Church, Green Hill Presbyterian Church, Hillcrest Baptist Church, and St. John’s Catholic Church.

I can’t think of a better way for God to transform children’s lives in our community than through His churches working together in service to Him!

In His Service,

Tracy Bullinger
Children’s Pastor, St. Luke UMC

I am the light of the world; whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life. -John 8:12.

The Gospel Sounds Trio is coming to Enterprise! On August 14 they will sing at Bethel Baptist Church at 10am and then they will be at Green Hill at 11am to sing with us during our service. The trio is made up of three ladies, Nancy, Peggy, and our very own Sandy! The Trio started singing together at

Cowan Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Sandy’s two friends are traveling all of the way from Tennessee to visit Enterprise. Everyone, please make plans to be at church to hear them!

Enterprise City Schools will return to class on Thursday, August 4. Please pray for our students, our teachers, our parents, and everyone involved in the education process. Especially pray for the young students we have here at Green Hill and the schools they will be attending.
