This year Our Shoeboxes Are Going To…

operationchristmaschild

The news has come in from Operation Christmas Child and we now know that our shoeboxes have been shipped to three different countries:  Mali, Burkina Faso, and Ghana.  You may remember that we had shoeboxes go to Ghana in 2013, and we had shoeboxes go to Burkina Faso in 2015.  How interesting that our boxes are going to those countries again!

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this project, either by packing a shoebox or by contributing to the shipping costs, or both.  And thank you to everyone who has prayed for the continued success of Operation Christmas Child.

Mali

Shoebox gifts collected in the United States in 2016 will be delivered to 257,280 children in Mali. Praise God that over 1,153,409 children have received a shoebox since 2005, when Operation Christmas Child began distributing gifts here.

  • Mali has 16.9 million people and is located in West Africa
  • 47% of the population is 14 years old or younger

Good News. Great Joy.

Gathering Together

The church of Dogobala started this year after a shoebox distribution service in this village. Now, there are more than 70 new believers who gather together to worship the Lord in this church.

Opening Doors

A local volunteer reported: “Koulikoro is a big town located about 60km northeast of Bamako. Local volunteers arrived there for a distribution in the government schools. The volunteers and a pastor went to see the schoolmaster to explain face-to-face the reason for which they were there. The schoolmaster rejected the team, saying that he did not recognize the church or the pastor. Somehow, the governor was alerted about the schoolmaster’s behavior toward these Christian volunteers. He ordered the school management board to let the visitors distribute the gifts. During the distribution, everyone could read the joy and the peace on the students’ faces. The schoolmaster approached the team members to apologize and asked to strengthen the relationship between them. From that day to now, the church and the pastor have much respect in the city. Children are now going to the church anytime they want.”

Prayer Requests from Ministry Partners in Mali

  • Praise God for the many ministry partners who are gaining a better understanding of what the project can do to strengthen the churches in Mali.
  • Pray for continued stability in the country.
  • Pray for the containers as they enter the country and are distributed throughout the country.

Burkina Faso

Shoebox gifts collected in the United States in 2016 will be delivered to 281,400 children in Burkina Faso. Praise God that over 1,307,629 children have received a shoebox since 1999, when Operation Christmas Child began distributing gifts here.

  • Burkina Faso has 19.5 million people and is located in West Africa
  • 45% of the population is 14 years old or younger

A Life Transformed

After a shoebox distribution, a local volunteer reported: “One boy who smoked cigarettes was seriously ill. He was touched by the gifts and gave his life to the Lord, who transformed him. Today, he no longer smokes. He recovered his health and is joyful with his parents. He even helps with Sunday school.”

Reaching Families

At an OCC shoebox distribution, Levi, 11-years-old, gave his life to God and his parents – who had abandoned the faith – returned to the church.

Spiritual Revival

A local volunteer said: “Many children and adults gave their lives to the Lord after the distribution of the shoeboxes. The population is asking for someone to come to plant a church.”

Prayer Requests From Ministry Partners in Burkina Faso

  • Praise God for His provision for OCC.
  • Pray for the safety and the ministry of the team members as they travel to support the project.
  • Pray God continues to strengthen and motivate partners, who hold the Gospel sacred, to join OCC.

Ghana

Shoebox gifts collected in the United States in 2016 will be delivered to 385,920 children in Ghana. Praise God that over 2,232,178 children have received a shoebox since 1996, when Operation Christmas Child began distributing gifts here.

  • Ghana has 26.9 million people and is located in the sub region of West Africa
  • 38% of the population is 14 years old or younger

Sharing the Greatest Gift

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights” (James 1:17a, NIV).

While distributing Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts in a village in Ghana, a member of the National Leadership Team noticed the thickly calloused feet of a young boy. “Please, God, let this boy receive a pair of shoes in his box,” the woman prayed. The boy had never owned a pair of shoes and walked a total of six miles just to get to school every day. When the child opened his box, he found not just one pair of shoes, but two, and both pairs were just his size. The volunteer rejoiced when she saw that God had placed the perfect gift into the hands, and onto the feet, of this child.

Bringing Revival

A local volunteer reported: “A distribution to 377 children in the village was seen as a miracle for the community, because all 377 children received what they needed and their parents, who are subsistence farmers, could not provide. They received items such as schools supplies–particularly pens, pencils, and notebooks–and personal items like shoes and clothing, socks, toothbrushes, (before this most of them used chewing sticks) and soap. Since then, everybody in the village goes to church every Sunday in a sort of revival atmosphere.”

Changing Communities

After a shoebox distribution, a church in the western region started The Greatest Journey lessons. They completed the lessons within six weeks, and now the pastors testify to changes in the lives of the children. “Those who used to steal have stopped. Lying has stopped. Truancy has stopped, and parents are now testifying to a change in the lives of their children.”

Prayer Requests from Ministry Partners in Ghana

  • Praise God for His great faithfulness in the events of last year and the preparations for this year.
  • Pray for the NLT and RLTs as they continue to communicate the mission and vision of OCC and the heart behind it.

The Greatest Journey

Your shoebox is just the first step to transforming a young life for eternity. Every shoebox gift delivered by Operation Christmas Child is a tangible expression of God’s love. It also presents an opportunity in more than 100 countries for our church partners to invite children into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ through our follow-up discipleship program. The Greatest Journey is a dynamic approach to discipleship—including 12 engaging Bible lessons—that local trained teachers are using to instruct the next generation of believers on how to become devoted followers of Christ and boldly share their faith with others. Worldwide, 10.9 million children have enrolled in the program since 2009.

Will you help us “go and make disciples of all nations” as Christ commanded? Sign up for a monthly gift of $6, and each year you will give 12 children study materials, a New Testament, and the opportunity to learn what it means to devote their lives to sharing the Good News of eternal grace through Jesus Christ.
