Green Hill Chrismon Tree
A Chrismon Tree is a variation of the Christmas Tree developed in the 20th century. It is decorated with ornaments called Chrismons, or Christian Symbols. The concept was developed in 1957 by Frances Kipps Spencer, a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, Virginia. Mrs. Spencer wanted to create decorations appropriate for a church’s Christmas celebrations.
At Green Hill Presbyterian Church, we carry on the tradition of the Chrismon Tree. All of our ornaments have been hand made by the ladies of the church, with some of the ornaments being over forty years old. Each year the tree is decorated by our church family as part of the Greening of the Church. Our tree is on display in the Sanctuary through the month of December.
Thank you to everyone who came out to the church last night to take part in decorating the tree. Mrs. Spencer stated a tree was never finished until someone came to see it and had the story of Christ explained to them through the ornaments. We are proud to continue this tradition.
